As I mentioned a few posts back, I bought a lot of masks from The Face Shop recently. Some of them I love (the Imperial Herbs line is a-w-e-s-o-m-e; more info soon), but there are some that were not only “meh” but “nyaargh” in results.
It would have been fine if they simply didn’t work, but noooo they had to be horrible on my skin. Imagine that. Skin care stuff ending up worsening my skin condition? Wouldn’t be the first time, but it’s not like I’ve learned my lesson by now. I still try, try and try new stuff on my face. I swear it’s like I hate myself or something.
Anyway, so apart from the The Face Shop loves I mentioned in the earlier posts, I had two variants that were seriously, freakishly terrible on me. I should’ve known they would have adverse effects after I saw the words “SD Alcohol 40″ near the top of the ingredients list. It’s a known irritant plus alcohol really isn’t great on the skin (not all alcohols, of course, but that’s a long story). Still I decided to forge ahead and slap the masks on my face.
Read on for my sheet mask mishaps.
Let’s start with the one that’s not so terrible (comparatively): TFS Cereal Rice Mask Sheet.
According to the TFS website:
Packed with various healthy cereals this mask sheet gives effectively vital power to your skin. This mask sheet clarifies and evens out skin tone.
Okaaay. That’s not exactly what happened after I use the mask. First I noticed that this mask is a lot drippier and the sheet is not as thick as with the Essentials line. When I say it drips, it seriously does, as in it rolls down my throat and is super sticky.
After leaving the mask on for 15 minutes, I took it off and was disappointed. It didn’t clarify my skin at all, plus there was no difference in how it looks. So you can argue that I have to use this regularly to see changes, but another problem is that it left me with rough and patchy skin. My face hurt whenever I accidentally pulled on skin near the cheek area. It became reddish and sensitive. Not a good sign, obviously.
So it didn’t work, and it left my skin sensitive and a bit red. Not purchasing this again, certainly.
But there’s something worse: TFS Lavender and Neroli Sheet Mask.
I’m disappointed because this was one of the more raved masks online. Unfortunately it wasn’t good for my skin at all. The website describes it as such:
Lavender & Neroli sooth and relax both body and soul. They Sooth flushed skin delight and nurture sensitive skin.
Let me just say I used this after a really bad day at work, because I was thinking that I could use some relaxation, you know? Turns out I didn’t even like the scent. It smelled like I had car freshener all over my face.
The consistency is similar to the Cereal Rice Sheet Mask. It’s drippy and sheet itself is kinda thin. I tried massaging it into my face afterwards, but it was too sticky that it took me a long time to pat it all in.
While still using the mask, I already felt a tingling on my cheeks. Did I say “tingling”? I meant “stinging”. Yes. It was painful, and it was — I think — the high alcohol content.
Did it soothe my skin? Hell no. Did it relax my nerves? Na-ah.
Here’s the kicker: it gave me bad, bad bumps. As in not just tiny red ones; seriously big acne-ish ones! I had to work double hard to get back my healthy skin!
Will I purchase these variants again? No freaking way.
